Grain Highlights 07.07.2021

As of 05.07.2021, about 1 million hectares of cereals have been harvested in Russia, 2.7 million tons of grain have been harvested at an average yield of 3.64 tons/hectare (3.13 tons/hectare in 2020).

- According to data from the Ministry of Agriculture of Russia, grain exports from the country reached 47.8 million tons in 2020/21 (42.4 million tons in 19/20), including wheat exports of 27.2 million tons (+10%), barley exports of 6.1 million tons (+37.8%) and corn exports of 4 million tons (+2.9%). The main buyers were Turkey with 8.4 million tons of grain, Egypt with 8.1 million tons, Saudi Arabia with 2.8 million tons, Bangladesh with 1.8 million tons and Pakistan with 1.6 million tons. In 2021/22, exports are estimated at 51 million tons.

- In May, 793,400 tons of sunseed were processed in Ukraine, which is the lowest monthly level since the beginning of the season. Over the period of September - May, the processing of sunseed reached 11.2 million tons (-15%).

- From the beginning of the season until 30.06.2021, 40.038 million tons of grain were exported from the EU, which is 23.4% less than the previous year. Imports reached 19.922 million tons (-19.1%). 14.561 million tons of corn were imported (-26%).

- The German Farmers' Association DBV expects the wheat production in Germany in 2021 at 22.82 million tons, which is 5% more than in 2020. The rapeseed production is projected at 3.71 million tons (+ 6%).

- Yesterday, commodity funds in Chicago were net sellers of 35,000 contracts of corn, 24,000 contracts of soybeans and 14,500 contracts of wheat.

- According to Oil World, the five largest exporters of soybeans in the world in June exported a total of 13.41 million tons of soybeans (18.33 million tons in May), including:

  • Brazil - 11.1 million tons (15)
  • the United States - 0.85 million tons (1.3)
  • Argentina - 0.45 million tons (0.88)
  • Uruguay - 0.29 million tons (0.48)
  • Paraguay - 0.73 million tons (0.72)

China imported 7.67 million tons of soybeans for the period (11.13). Over the period of September - June, soybean exports were 134.2 million tons (131.3).

- According to Safras & Mercado, as of July 2, 2021, Brazilian farmers have sold 49% of the expected new second corn crop. 7.8% of the areas were harvested, including 14.4% in Mato Grosso.

- On 06.07.2021, Jordan purchased 60,000 tons of durum wheat of any origin at a price of 279.95 USD/ton C&F and delivery in the second half of the year.

- The South Korean company Nonghyup Feed Inc purchased 138,000 tons of feed corn with delivery within November-December and 65,000 tons of feed wheat with delivery in November. Buyers have doubled their purchases of feed wheat due to its lower price compared to corn. Wheat is expected to replace corn consumption by 10-15%. The company Major Feed Group has purchased 65,000 tons of Black Sea feed wheat at a price of 286.86 USD/ton C&F + 1.25 USD/ton for unloading with delivery within September - October. Now, corn prices in Easter Asia is at 316 USD/ton C&F, which is 29 USD/ton more than feed wheat. In mid-April, the difference was 33.20 USD/ton.

- Algeria has announced a tender for the purchase of at least 50,000 tons of milling wheat of any origin.

- Turkey has announced a tender for the purchase of 395,000 tons of red milling wheat of any origin and delivery within August 16-30.
