As of September 15, 2023, Russia has harvested 119.8 million tons of grain, including 86.5 million tons of wheat, 20.5 million tons of barley, and 161,200 tons of corn. The harvested sunseed reached 1.4 million tons, and harvested rapeseed reached 2.7 million tons. It is expected that the winter crop areas for the 2024/25 season will reach 7.9 million hectares (compared to 7.4 million in 2023/24).
During the period from September 1 to September 18, Russia exported 3.3 million tons of wheat (+27% compared to the previous year), a total of 3.7 million tons of grain (+20.5%), 374,000 tons of barley (-17%), and 24,300 tons of corn. The largest customer for wheat is Egypt with 535,000 tons, followed by Iran with 276,000 tons, and Indonesia with 226,500 tons.
As of September 18, 2023, Ukraine has planted winter crops on 584,600 hectares, which is 11.4% of the forecasted area. Wheat has been planted on 513,700 hectares, and barley has been sown on 46,900 hectares. Rapeseed has been sown on 999,600 hectares (82.5% of the forecasted area).
In the United States, the spring wheat harvesting for 2023/24 has been completed on 93% of the planted acres (compared to 93% last year and an average of 93% over the last five years). The wheat production is expected to reach 47.2 million tons (44.9 and 48.7). As of September 17, 2023, corn has been harvested on 9% of the planted areas, and soybeans have been harvested on 5% of the areas. Planting of winter wheat for the 2024/25 season has been completed on 15% of the planned areas.
Yesterday, Chicago commodity funds were net sellers of 10,000 soybean contracts, 6,000 wheat contracts, and 5,000 corn contracts.
During the past week, China purchased 5-10 cargoes of wheat from France, with the total quantity ranging from 300,000 to 600,000 tons, and deliveries scheduled from November to March.
