Grain Highlights 05.10.2024

As of October 3, 2024, in Ukraine, 8.531 million hectares have been harvested with grain crops (77% of the planned area), yielding 37.262 million tons of grain with an average yield of 4.24 tons per hectare.

- As of October 3, 2024, 37% of the corn in Ukraine has been harvested, with 7.685 million tons of grain collected, yielding an average of 5.16 tons/hectare. Sunseed has been harvested on 79% of the areas, yielding 8.037 million tons of product with an average yield of 2.05 tons/hectare. Soybeans have been harvested on 74% of the areas, with 4.277 million tons collected at an average yield of 2.17 tons/hectare. The sunseed production is not expected to exceed 10.5 million tons, which is very low. The production is far enough along that large deviations from this forecast are unlikely. For corn, the production is mathematically set at 20.8 million tons, but yields in the central and northern regions may result in a production of 22-23 million tons.

- As of October 4, 2024, Ukraine has exported 11.041 million tons of grain (compared to 6.822 million tons the previous year), including 592,000 tons in October (153,000 last year). Exports include 6.401 million tons of wheat (301,000 tons in October), 1.418 million tons of barley (5,000 tons), and 2.955 million tons of corn (194,000 tons).

- Between July and September, Ukraine's rapeseed exports reached 1.8 million tons, up 13.7% from the previous year (1.6 million tons), according to data from Ukroliyaprom. In 2024, sunflower oil exports will be 4.6 million tons (+13.4% from 4.1 million tons). In September, exports were 370,200 tons (+3.6%). Soyoil exports totaled 259,400 tons (+25% from 207,100 tons), with 39,200 tons in September (-63%). Ukraine's oilseed production in 2024/25 is expected to be between 20.32 and 21.6 million tons (21.69 million last year).

- The Turkish government is easing its wheat import ban. Turkish millers can import wheat, provided that at least 85% of the volume is purchased from the state agency TMO.

- Malaysia's Palm Oil Association notes that 664,000 hectares, or 12% of palm plantations, will need to be replanted in 2025, as they are over 25 years old. By 2027, over one-third of the plantation area will be classified as old, making it difficult to reach the target of 18 million tons of palm oil.

- From July to September, Egypt ranked first among recipients of Russian grain, with 2.908 million tons (+40% from the previous year), including 2.884 million tons of wheat. Saudi Arabia was second with 1.391 million tons, followed by Iran with 1.264 million tons, Turkey with 1.262 million tons, and Algeria with 978,000 tons. In wheat exports, following Egypt were Turkey with 1.029 million tons, Algeria with 978,000 tons, Bangladesh with 907,000 tons, and Kenya with 659,000 tons.
